Sega is now jumping into the world of first-party mini game consoles. The Sega Genesis Mini console will release on September 19, 2019. The unit will include 40 games, including Altered BeastCastlevania: Bloodlines and Sonic the Hedgehog. It will retail for $79.99. The Sega Genesis Mini console includes two full-size controllers (the 3 button versions), the mini console, an HDMI cable, and a wall wart power adapter.

The design of the unit is based on the original Model 1 Genesis console that launched in North America in 1989. Sega states that this version of the console will be about 55 percent the size of the original console. M2, the developer of past games Sega Ages and Sega 3D Classic Collection, is currently developing the software for the device. Originally, AtGames was developing the Sega Genesis Mini, but Sega made a change. The Genesis Mini’s official page is quick to proclaim, ” Made by SEGA, Genesis Mini delivers quality as only a 1st party product can.” The website even includes the official Sega Genesis Seal of Quality logo.

Sega has only announced ten of the games that are going to be included on its mini console for now. The ten games announced are:

  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Space Harrier II
  • Shining Force
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • ToeJam & Earl
  • Comix Zone
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Altered Beast
  • Gunstar Heroes

Sega also states that pre-order links and information is coming soon. Sega has also announced that all the games on the mini console would have a save-anywhere function. Sega also announced that the Japanese version of the Sega Genesis Mini would come with six-button controllers, while the North American version of the console will only come with three-button controllers. The unit also uses a USB connection to hook to the controllers, so players will not be able to use their original Genesis controllers on the mini console.
